Prosecutors won't charge Madonna after crucifixion scene

Prosecutors say laws protecting artistic freedom prevent charges

Prosecutors who attended Madonna's German concert said her controversial crucifixion scene contained nothing illegal, according to Associated Press.

While the scene might be "hurtful to religious people," there was no indication of a criminal offense, spokesman Johannes Mocken told the AP. In Germany it is a crime to insult another's religious beliefs, however Mocken said laws protecting artistic freedom covered the concert.

The scene had Madonna wearing a fake crown of thorns and appearing in front of a mirrored cross. The scene grew great criticism from religious leaders in Italy when Madonna performed the stunt in the country earlier this month.

Madonna has insisted the scene is not meant to be disrespectful to the church.
