Punk Club Gives it One Last Shot
With only 29 days to go on their lease before the rent doubles, legendary punk club CBGB is holding an all-out star-filled effort to keep the club afloat. Seminal performers who got their start at the club, Patti Smith, Steven Van Zandt, Tommy Ramone and Debbie Harry joined CBGB owner Hilly Kristal at a press conference on Monday to announce the details of the plan. Benefit concerts will be held throughout the month of August to recoup past months missed rent as well as bear the brunt of the new sky-high rent.
Bands like the Misfits, Chevelle, Living Colour, and the Dead Boys will all take the stage to raise money for and awareness about the possible closure of perhaps the most important punk music club. The month of concerts will be concluded with a rally at Washington Square Park on August 31. If the club does not raise enough money and come to an agreement with the Bowery Residents Community, the club will be closed on September 1.
