Quaid Discovers What Almost Killed His Twin Babies

Dennis Quaid's newborn twins overdosed on heparin.

After a life threatening incident last November, actor Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly have finally discovered what put their newborn twins in jeopardy. While being treated for an infection at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the babies received 2,000 times the intended dosage of a blood-thinning drug, heparin, the Associated Press reported.

The twins were born on Nov. 8, 2007 to a surrogate mother; they were nearly killed 10 days later when they received an extreme overdose of the drug.

An investigation found that the staff at Cedars-Sinai was not sufficiently educated on the use of heparin. The labels on the heparin vials used on the newborns were not checked carefully by the nurses or pharmaceutical technicians that day.

(Cedars-Sinai sound familiar? It is the same hospital that pop singer Britney Spears was treated in for a major psychological breakdown last weekend.)

Fortunately, the Quaid couple's babies recovered from the incident, but the family is still upset.

In a statement released to the media, Quaid and his wife said, "The hospital's lack of candor has left us with the uneasy feeling that we may never know the whole story."
