Queens Student Arrested for Doodling on Desk
Committing a seemingly innocent act that was done by thousands before her, 12-year-old Alexa Gonzalez scribbled “Lex was Here 2/1/10” and “I Love my Friends Abby and Faith” in washable marker on her desk at Junior High School 190 in Forest Hills on Monday.
It will most likely be the last time she ever does so, as she was hauled off in handcuffs the same day, and held at the precinct across the street for several hours afterwards. Her classmates are also more likely to keep their pens on their papers as well.
According to NBC New York, David Cantor, a spokesman for the education department, said the incident “shouldn't have happened” and “common sense should prevail.”
This is not the first time a student was arrested for a minor incident. In 2007, a 13-year-old girl was arrested at her Dyker Heights School for writing “okay” on her desk.
Gonzalez is still suspended from school, and has been assigned eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she’s learned from the experience.
