Radiohead Releases Song About the Last, Late WWI Vet
On Aug. 5 the British band Radiohead released a new song titled "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)."
According to Entertainment Weekly, Patch was the oldest surviving British World War I veteran who recently died at the age of 111. The song is a descriptive anti-war ballad inspired by a radio interview Patch gave in 2005. The proceeds of the song go to a veterans charity.
The Associate Press reported that in the interview he recounted the horrors of war he endured. Thom Yorke (frontman for Radiohead) and bandmate Jonny Greenwood had actually recorded the song before his death.
According to NME.com, Yorke has blogged about his reasons for recording and releasing the new track. In his blog he says that the interview was emotional and that his inspiration was a result of the interview's profound effect on him.
