Radiohead's New Album Tops Charts
Radiohead's new album, In Rainbows, is this week's top-selling album in the country, following the Jan. 1 release of the CD version to record shops and other retail stores nationwide. The album made news three months ago when it was made available to fans online at whatever price they were willing to pay for the digital file download.
According to The New York Times, this album sold 122,000 copies in the United States with only 28,000 of those sold on digital services such as iTunes. Although lower than previous albums, this number contradicts the popular belief that the compact disc is dead. Retailers explain many listeners still purchase CDs and even vinyl LPs for the better audio quality.
The album also earned the top spot on the British music charts this week. With the popularity of MP3 players and iTunes still on the rise, Radiohead's sales of its newest album could mean there is still hope for physical products in the music business.
