Rapper Shot and Killed in L.A. Mall
Atlanta rapper Dolla was fatally shot at the Beverly Center Mall in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. The midday shooting, which left mall patrons diving for cover, pushed a police dragnet over the local area in an attempt to locate two suspects.
Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, was waiting with another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, in the valet area when he was shot in the head. According to the Los Angeles Times, police said two suspects fled from the scene. Two hours later, police detained a "person of interest" as he attempted to board a plane. Authorities believe he drove to LAX from the mall.
SOHH.com reported that the altercation that led to the shooting was witnessed by a mall employee. According to TMZ, the "person of interest" that Los Angeles police arrested is 20-year-old Aubrey Berry. According to the report, Berry was approached by police and immediately surrendered, raising his hands and telling them he had a 9 millimeter handgun in his waistband.
Burton arrived in Los Angeles to work on his first album. He was taken from the mall to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He was 21.
