Wednesday’s overnight ratings are in, and it appears that J.J. Abrams’ new action spy series, Undercovers, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe, could potentially be facing cancellation from NBC. After premiering to a relatively modest audience, Undercovers slid 20 percent last night, including a woeful 1.6 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic, TV by the Numbers reports.
Viewers of Undercovers are hoping that the series does not share the same fate of FOX's Lone Star. According to CollegeCandy.com, Lone Star was praised by critics and those who gave it a chance. However, it was axed after just two episodes as a result of insufficient ratings.
Although the series has been heavily promoted by the network, Abrams’ second spy series since Alias is struggling to attract viewers. On a more positive note for NBC, Law & Order: Los Angeles pulled in solid numbers with a 3.1 demo rating to become the third rookie fall premiere to exceed a 3.0 rating for the network.
As for ABC, the network’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series, Modern Family, fell 12 percent, but still pulled in an impressive 4.5 rating. The network’s new legal drama series, The Whole Truth, starring Maura Tierney and Rob Morrow, appears destined for cancellation after earning a dreadful 1.3 demo rating for its second episode.
CBS’ Survivor: Nicaragua slid 15 percent to a 3.4 rating, and the numbers are expected to drop even further with the elimination of former NFL head coach Jimmy Johnson. Meanwhile, ratings for The CW’s Project Runway and FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen were even with last week’s demo ratings of 2.1 and 2.9, respectively.
