A Recap of the Golden Globes
Just in case you missed out on watching the Golden Globes, here’s a recap of who won.
The night started out dreary in Hollywood with the stars being burdened with rain on the red carpet, making it necessary for umbrellas and plastic bags to be added as parts of the actors’ glamorous ensembles.
Ricky Gervais was this year’s host. As he noted multiple times, it’s debatable whether or not NBC would ever ask him back to host again since he took several cracks at the network’s recent low ratings and problems with their shows. However, he was very amusing, making playful jokes at Steve Carell while trying to promote his own products, ‘The Office’ and ‘The Invention of Lying.’
If the Golden Globe ceremony proved one thing, it’s that James Cameron’s new box office smash ‘Avatar’ actually deserves all the attention that it is getting. The film won Cameron the Best Director award and also took home the final award, Best Motion Picture Drama.
Just as predicted by the recent Critics’ Choice Awards, Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep seem to be the year’s best actresses. Streep was nominated twice in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and won for her role in ‘Julie and Julia.’ Bullock, nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama category, won for ‘The Blind Side.’ Now the question is will they both get nominated for Academy Awards, and if so, who will come out on top?
Martin Scorsese was the honoree this year for the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Leonardo Dicaprio and Robert De Niro did a wonderful job of presenting the honor to their good friend.
Other notable wins were ‘The Hangover’ taking the Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category and ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Glee’ winning the series categories for television.
Toni Collette defended her Emmy win by winning the Best Actress Television Musical or Comedy category for her work on ‘United States of Tara’, and Julianna Margulies won for her role on the first season of the CBS series ‘The Good Wife.’
After announcing only this week that he has been battling cancer, Michael C. Hall won a Golden Globe for his Showtime series, ‘Dexter.’ He beat both Hugh Laurie and Jon Hamm who have been awards favorites recently as well as Simon Baker and Bill Paxton.
Robert Downey, Jr. pulled a win in the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Movie category for ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ Though perhaps this was not expected, no one can deny the remarkable performances that Downey has had recently with the revival of his career. He was nothing but grateful when he accepted his award.
