The troubled son of Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal also got five years of probation

The late Farrah Fawcett’s troubled son with Ryan O’Neal, Redmond, 26, has escaped a prison sentence and has been given another chance.

Following pleading no contest on Wednesday to felony possession of a firearm by a felon, as well as heroin charges, the convicted drug offender was ordered to spend one year in an in-patient rehab center and got five years of formal probation.

E! Online reports that O’Neal could have received up to three years in state prison for his crime. Judge Keith Schwartz gave Redmond another chance to clean up his act, however, and stay out of trouble.

Ryan O’Neal’s attorneys issued a statement after the proceeding. “Today Judge Scwhartz ordered Redmond to undergo the best chance that he has had for a lasting recovery," it read. "The defense team is pleased and grateful that justice was served today."

Richard Pintal, Redmond’s lawyer, announced, “Redmond is grateful for the opportunity to receive additional intensive treatment.”

The charges stem from an August 2 arrest in Santa Monica, in which police found heroin in his car when he was on probation.
