Regis Returns to "Millionaire"

Regis Philbin returns to the show that made him a household name.

With the success of Slumdog Millionaire still recent, the old hit TV show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, will be airing a two-week tournament this summer on ABC, according to the New York Times. And the host of the show will be none other than Regis Philbin.

ABC announced that the show will return August 9 and air five consecutive days that week and the week after, with the finale being broadcast August 23.

The original Millionaire came out in 1999 and was a top-rated show for the next three years. But by the end of 2001, viewership had dropped from 29 million to 10 million and the show was dropped from prime time in 2002. Millionaire was later brought back as a shorter, syndicated daytime show hosted by Today show co-host Meredith Vieira.

U.S. network television is experiencing a slump due to the competition of other forms of entertainment such as DVDs and digital music, according to Reuters. Perhaps this revival will be just what TV needs.
