Last night, Ricky Gervais took the stage to host the 69th annual Golden Globe awards. Gervais was the topic of conversation; would he openly slam celebs? What will producers do if he starts swearing and offending? Luckily, those worries weren’t solidified, but now many are asking, “Why was Ricky so mild?”
The Chicago Tribune expresses its pleasure to Gervais calling this year’s hosting, “third time’s a charm.” The Tribune notes that Gervais didn’t aim his sharp tongue at all like in his second year hosting. Gervais poked fun at the likes of Johnny Depp and his film, The Tourist, asking the actor, “Have you even seen it?”
Madonna, surprisingly, was the one to stir the pot. When Gervais called to bring Madge onstage, he made references to her prior hits, calling her “Like a Virgin.” The laughter ensued when she took the stage and directly said, “Why don't you come over and do something about it? I haven't kissed a girl in a few years -- on TV."
On the other hand, People TV critic, Tom Gliatto, asks “Where was Ricky?” He openly slams the host for toning down his normal quips, and even describes in metaphor, “You can only shock the monkey so many times.” He adds, “If the monkey is an actor, it will learn to pretend to like it.”
Gliatto gives Gervais ‘props’ for his analogy in comparing the Globes and Oscars to that of Kim Kardashian and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge. And notes that the host did openly slam the absent Mel Gibson, passing it on to Jody Foster, who directed Gibson’s flopped film The Beaver, stating that nobody “has seen Jody Foster’s beaver.” Foster, being a good sport, gave Gervais a laugh and two thumbs up.
Did Gervais fail to bring the humor to the stage last night? Or, did he do is exactly as he should, host the show with a mild jab here and there?
