Rio de Janeiro to Host 2016 Summer Olympics
USA Today reports that Rio de Janeiro has won the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. This is the first time a South American city is hosting the event. Rio defeated Madrid in what is being called a landslide victory.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Chicago, which was expected to be among the two remaining finalists, was the first of the considered cities to be ousted from consideration. This comes despite pitches from President Obama, a Chicago native, to host the games in the Windy City.
The Associated Press states that Chicago's early elimination in the Olympic bidding is one of the biggest upsets in International Olympic Committee voting history. "It just wasn't our day to win," said Pat Ryan, chairman of Chicago's organizing committee. "That's just the way it goes. Some days you win, some days you don't."
