A musical based on Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is in the works.
The project is being helmed by Peter Schneider, Laurence Mark and Barry Kemp, producers of the film.
The film’s screenwriter Robin Schiff wrote the book for the musical, which she authorized for a private reading in New York last week. Stage actors Kerry Butler and Lesli Margherita played Michele and Romy, respectively.
A musical score has already been written by Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay, known for their work on the TV series Weeds.
"We picked them because we thought they were special, and we were looking for an 80's-90's rock sound," Kemp said.
The producers are aiming for a debut performance within the next 18 months and hope the musical will reach Broadway.
“It's a nurturing process," Kemp said. "We don't want to do a re-creation of the movie. We wanted to do a reimagining of the movie. There are some things that are familiar and some things that were not in the film.”
The film centers on the title characters, played by Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, who go to great lengths to impress the people who tormented them in high school as their 10-year reunion approaches.
