Recent news broke out that singer Katy Perry and actor Russell Brand are splitting up after a year of marriage and Brand made the split official when he filed for divorce on Friday.
Though Brand was the one to take the reigns and file for divorce, both he and Katy were on board for such a move.
Perry's parents are Evangelical Christians who raised her to believe that divorce is immoral. Hence, Brand was the one to file for divorce out of respect for Katy and her parents' religious beliefs.
Brand filed for divorce on Friday, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reasoning. Specific reasoning for the divorce is unknown, but sources close to the couple say that it is mutual and there were no massive fights.
According to TMZ, Perry and Brand had been contemplating divorce for the past few months but decided not to act on it until the two of them put in an effort to try and make the marriage work. Both concluded that "it just wasn't there."
They parted ways for the holidays because neither wanted to be at their Los Angeles home when the divorce was made official. Brand set off for England and Perry went to Hawaii for Christmas time.
Despite the rocky marriage and pending divorce, Brand released a statement on Friday saying that the two will remain friends.
