Russell Crowe to star in French film adaptation
Actor Russell Crowe has inked a deal to star in "The Next Three Days," an adaptation of the 2008 French film, "Pour Elle," which will reunite Lionsgate with Paul Haggis, the director of 2004's Oscar-winning drama, "Crash."
According to an article on Variety.com, "Crowe will play a teacher whose wife is arrested and convicted of a murder she says she did not commit. He comes up with a desperate plan to free her. Haggis, who wrote the script, will begin production in late September in Pittsburgh."
Haggis explained that the role required an actor who can play a regular guy faced with extraordinary circumstances and he felt that Crowe fit that description perfectly.
"We've seen him as the gladiator, but he has embodied the Everyman in so many pictures," Haggis said.
Michael Nozik will be producing with Haggis under their Highway 61 Films banner along with Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc of Fidelite Films. Nozik's producing credits include the 1988 romantic comedy starring Amy Irving, entitled "Crossing Delancey," the 1994 John Turturro/Rob Morrow drama, "Quiz Show," the 2000 Will Smith/Matt Damon drama, "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and the 2005 George Clooney thriller, "Syriana."
Haggis notes that the film delves into the profound ideas of faith and belief.
Currently, Crowe is shooting the Ridley Scott-directed version of "Robin Hood," where he plays the title character opposite Cate Blanchett in the role of Maid Marian. Universal and Imagine Entertainment are behind the movie.
