Ryan Reynolds' 'Green Lantern' Costume is Different than the Comic's

The updated costume is causing controversy among fans

Comic fans got the first glimpses of footage from the upcoming film Green Lantern at the Warner Bros. panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 24th. The panel did not, however, show the superhero’s costume.

The title character’s costume has already been displayed on the cover of People some issues ago and it has appeared as part of the Comic-Con sneak preview.

Ryan Reynolds, who will play the dual role of the lead character, and Hal Jordan spoke to MTV News about the costume and the controversy that surrounds it.

“Truthfully, we’ve only seen a tiny glimpse of the suit,” Reynolds said. “We haven’t seen it in motion, and we haven’t seen the full suit as well.”

MTV reported that the suit was created using only CGI and has lines all over it to recreate the musculature of Jordan. The Green Lantern in the comics and cartoons wears white gloves, but this rendition will be gloveless — which Reynolds is okay with.

“The white gloves aren’t there, and I think that’s fine because, specifically, they’re lame,” he said. “But everything else is going to be there. I think the fanboys and the people that are new to the character are going to love it.”

Yet while Reynolds thinks the costume will have much support in its new form, the changes actually created controversy among fans of the comic. Reynolds said not everyone is satisfied, and that is a good thing.

“There has to be a little healthy debate about it,” he explained. “That’s important. If it were just slanted one way or the other, I don’t think it would be that satisfying.”
