Same Sex Civil Unions Legal in New Hampshire
In a move that Governor John Lynch is referring to as "taking the lead in opposing discrimination," the state of New Hampshire has legalized civil unions between same-sex partners. Gay couples will be able to have the same rights and responsibilities that come with marriage. Taking it a step further, Lynch also signed a measure to ensure that same-sex unions from other states are recognized in New Hampshire.
Lynch denies allegations that marriage is threatened by the measure. "I've listened and I've heard all the arguments. I believe this is a matter of conscience and fairness."
Massachusetts is still the only state in the union to have legalized gay marriage. Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, Maine, California, and Washington have legalized either civil unions or domestic partnerships. Come January, add to that Oregon and New Hampshire. Hawaii offers some spousal rights, both to same-sex couples and heterosexual pairs living together.
