San Francisco's New "Big Unit"
And why not give their fans a greater sense of security? The Giants' already steller pitching crew, including Cy Young winners Barry Zito and Tim Lincecum, gained one of the most accomplished pitchers in baseball history on Friday.
Randy Johnson, who will be seeking his 300th career win this year, signed with the Giants for a one-year contract worth $8 million, as MLB.com reports.
Johnson has been in the league for 21 years, making 596 pitching appearances. He has won the Cy Young Award five different times during his tenure, and played in ten All-Star games in both the American and National Leagues. Johnson also won the World Series in 2001 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
His career ERA stands at 3.26, and he has accumulated 4,789 strikeouts, which is the second most all-time. The Giants will be the sixth team for which Johnson has pitched.
Having Johnson in their pitching rotation may give the Giants an option to trade another pitcher for a power hitter or infielder. It also gives them the opportunity to let left-handed pitcher Noah Lowry heal from the forearm surgeries that he endured earlier this year.
