Sarah Michelle Gellar says award shows don’t make good date nights

Sarah Michelle Gellar showed up solo for the Golden Globes on Sunday.

The Ringer actress says despite what people may think, attending award shows with her husband Freddie Prinze, Jr., whom she’s been with for nearly 12 years, doesn’t make for the perfect date night.

“People always say when you're a couple and you come to these things, people always say, ‘oh, it's date night.' And you're like, well, this is the worst date night I could possibly think of…everybody looking at you, no chance,” she told Giuliana Rancic on Live from the Red Carpet.

Instead, Gellar says date night for them is a little more low-key.

“Date night is usually like…you know, IHOP."

The actress, who said her 2-year-old daughter Charlotte picked out her Globes outfit, revealed instead of attending the awards, her husband was at home “watching football.” She also revealed he already had a memorable Globes experience back in the day.

“He was Mr. Golden Globe,” she said. “I said [he was Mr. Golden Globe] when it was still in black and white. A lot of years ago. I think he actually might have been the first.”
