Schwarzenegger Vows He Will 'Be Back' to Fight for State-Wide Health Care
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Ca.) vowed today to press on in his efforts to secure state-wide health-insurance. This announcement comes on the heels of a failure of a universal health care bill that Schwarzenegger backed to pass yesterday in a state Senate committee.
The Governor, once famous for his film and modeling work, obstinately maintained he would continue to fight. He things of this fight as a "golden opportunity" to have California demonstrate to the rest of the country that universal health care is a realistic possibility.
The bill before the Seante committee, although generally backed by the Democratic Senate, was defeated in a 7-1 vote by the Senate Health Committee. Voting members of the health committee cite the bill's complexity and its putative cost - what could be more than $14 billion - as the reason for its failure.
California, the most populous U.S. state, is currently facing a budget shortfall due to slumps in the state's housing market, as well as a cooling national economy.
