Screen Actors Guild Awards Might Surprise Hollywood

The SAG awards might not favor the award season's front-runners this Sunday.

Surprises might be in store for attendees of this Sunday's Screen Actors Guild award ceremony, as Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will most likely dominate this year's award season.

Those in the running for top acting awards include Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, along with Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Downey, Jr.

According to the Washington Post, the SAG awards are often a hint of what is to come for February's Oscar ceremony, often choosing the actors who will also win an Oscar.

Tom O'Neil, a Web columnist for www.TheEnvelope.com, expects the SAG awards to upset the Oscars, saying, "SAG has the potential to throw the Oscars into turmoil," adding that he expects the Meryl Streep film, Doubt, to sweep the SAG ceremonies.

Both Benjamin Button and Slumdog picked up numerous Oscar nominations, but only a few SAG nominations. Slumdog Millionaire, already a winner of four Golden Globes, has only two chances for a SAG, while Benjamin Button has three.

"I think the likelihood is that SAG won't go for 'Slumdog,'" says David Poland, editor of Movie City News. "People admire 'Benjamin Button' but they don't love it. It is big and the acting is beautiful but it doesn't hit them emotionally."

Also in the running for SAG awards are Frost/Nixon and Milk, which have a good chance of picking up awards in their categories.
