Semi-Pro Underperforms
Will Ferrell's new film, Semi-Pro, even though it will easily finish first in the box office, has been an extreme disappointment in the first two days of its release, according to Variety.
The R-rated basketball comedy finished with $5.4 million Friday in 3,121 theaters, which is Ferrell's lowest grossing comedy, even finishing lower than the R-rated Old School.
One of the biggest factors in Semi-Pro's poor performance could be the film's R-rating. This discourages many fans of Ferrell's styles of films, the high school crowd aged 13-16.
Support of this theory lies in the previous box office success of some of Ferrell's PG-13 films, including Blades of Glory and Anchorman.
Semi-Pro posted a 53 percent opening day drop from last week's number one film, Sony's Vantage Point.
Following Semi-Pro in the box office return on opening day was the aforementioned Vantage Point, The Other Boleyn Girl, Jumper and The Spiderwick Chronicles, in order.
