A Sequel for 'Holmes' already in the works
"Sherlock Holmes" is set for release on Christmas day, starring Robert Downey, Jr. and directed by Guy Ritchie. The film is about three months away and the company behind it is already talking sequel.
The writers behind the "Justice League: Mortal" film, Kieran and Michele Mulroney, are set to write the sequel to "Holmes." As an added bonus, the film might have superstar Brad Pitt playing James Moriarty, the arch-nemesis to Sherlock Holmes in the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
According to Hollywoodreporter.com, "Pitt has been the subject of a litany of blog rumors as appearing in several shots of 'Holmes' as Moriarty."
As the story goes, those who know the script say that the character of Moriarty is often hidden in the shadows and identity is not revealed so it's unsure if Pitt will be in the first film.
Also up in the air is whether or not the sequel would continue to draw from material originally written by Doyle or invent a whole new story altogether, seeing as how those who worked on the screenplay for "Holmes" are returning.
Ritchie has confirmed that there will be some type of appearance of the villain Moriarty in "Holmes," but that the actor who is to play him will not be credited, as reported on Eonline.com.
