Sex and the City Still on Top
Sex and the City has sold more than $55.7 million in ticket sales in their big reuniting on the big screen. This was almost twice what the distributor Warner Bros. said they would make at the box office, reported the Associated Press. The head of distribution, Dan Fellman, had hopes that it might bring in about $30 million. "Women power. It was outstanding this weekend," he told AP.
People in the industry had expected Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to keep up with the first place spot for the second weekend, but so far it is lagging behind the ladies in second place with $46 million. Fellman also said, "That's why Friday was quite a frenzy. There were women that came in and bought out entire theaters in advance and invited all their friends." Women were 85 percent of the audience, he said.
Rogue Pictures horror film The Strangers came in solidly at No. 3, making $20.7 million, surpassing its predictions as well, according to Reuters. The movie stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple who is terrorized by masked invaders at their new vacation home.
Also making the charts was Iron Man, which is still doing strongly in No. 4, pulling in $14 million. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was able to stick it out in its third weekend, at No. 5, pulling in $13 million.
