Shea Stadium Is "Movin' Out"

New York builds new stadiums, "Piano Man" scheduled to play farewell concert at Shea.

New York baseball seems to be in the midst of a makeover. Construction is under way for a new Yankee Stadium, albeit right next to the old one, in Macombs Dam Park. Shea Stadium will also no longer be the Mets' home venue next year, as the new Citi Field Stadium is set to open for the 2009 season. Citi Field Stadium will be located in what is now the current parking lot.

The Yankees plan to say farewell to their stadium by hosting the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The Mets chose to host a farewell concert by none other than the Piano Man, Billy Joel.

Billy Joel will play the night after Yankee Stadium's All-Star game. He plans to throw Shea "the ultimate concert farewell party," according to the Washington Post.

Joel, now 58, released his first hit song "Piano Man" in 1973. According to the RIAA, he is the sixth best-selling recording artist in the U.S. He has also won 6 Grammy Awards. He is from Hicksville, New York, formerly Levittown, and is an avid New York sports fan.

Joel will be the last artist to perform at Shea, a venue that has hosted artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Elton John, and Bruce Springsteen, to name just a few.

Oh, and sometimes they played baseball there too.
