Shutter Island Cheat Sheet

Leonardo DiCaprio's new film opens nationwide in theaters today, and to help audiences keep tracks of the films twists, Mtv has created a Shutter Cheat Sheet to help you along...

U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) arrives on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a patient at a hospital for the criminally insane. What he discovers at the decrepit facility is no where near what he expected as the insane asylum takes him and viewers on a psychological roller-coaster ride.

The film was adapted Dennis Lehane’s book, who is also the author of “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone.” Not always called “Shutter Island,” early in the film’s cinematic life it was known as “Ashecliffe,” named after the asylum where the story takes place.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film’s initial trailer in June 2009 offered everything fans love about Scorsese projects. Shutter Island co-star Mark Ruffalo told Mtv, "It is Martin Scorsese's playground with this movie. He gets to do everything he loves about film. He does noir, fantasy sequences, dream sequences, madness, suspense, tough urban stuff. Its absolute madness and twist upon twist. This could be one of his great films.”

With "Gangs of New York" (2002), "The Aviator" (2004), "The Departed" (2006) and soon "Shutter Island," Scorsese and DiCaprio are quickly becoming Hollywood’s Dynmic-Duo squarely competing against the Burton-Depp franchise.

When asked what’s in store for the actor/director combo, Scorsese thinks he’s found in DiCaprio the man to play Frank Sinatra in the big screen biopic. "I don't know," DiCaprio told Mtv recently when asked about the possibility, before adding with a laugh, "Oh, I can sing like Sinatra, man, definitely. Can't everyone?"
