'Simpsons' could be saved from being cancelled

The Simpsons might not be cancelled after all.

According to Reuters, a deal is reportedly in place that would allow the show to run its 24th or 25th season. A source close to the situation says the show's voice actors and the studio that produces it are wrapping up talks to save the hit cartoon series.

The longest-running scripted series in primetime, the show could potentially celebrate its 25th season if a deal is made. The actors have already said they are willing to take pay cuts if necessary, but they also stipulated that they want back-end payments. The studio has so far rejected the latter request.

As the Washington Post reports, Harry Shearer, one of the voice actors involved in the negotiations, said he was willing to take a pay cut of 70 percent in exchange for production profits.

"If pay cuts are what it will take to keep the show on the air, then cut my pay,” he said. “In fact, to make it as easy as possible for Fox to keep new episodes of The Simpsons coming, I’m willing to let them cut my salary not just 45 percent but more than 70 percent.”

Shearer said he was willing to take the pay cut in order to allow fans to continue watching the cult television show.

“We’ve had a great run and no one should feel sorry for any of us,” he said. ‘’But given how much joy the show has given so many people over the years — and given how many billions of dollars in profits News Corp. has earned and will earn from it — I find it hard to believe that this is Fox’s final word on the subject.”
