There would have been no James Bond without Sir Sean Connery. He was the first and for his fans, the one and only. James Bond was conceived by writer Ian Fleming as a predatory alpha male. At nearly 6’3”, the former Royal Navy sailor and Scottish body builder embodied the cold sexy assassin in the first seven James Bond films. Connery is as good as Bond.
So why was he snubbed at a 007 at the 50th anniversary of celebration of the franchise in London? Fans want answers!
Connery was the most convincing Bond. Why? Imagine the young Sean in a pub in Glasgow being taunted by a fool. Even without James Bond’s gadgets Connery looks like the guy who could have an opponent’s face on the floor in 10 seconds flat. Connery made James Bond into an icon yet despite his seven classic films as 007 he appeared in a tribute video for barely five seconds. The event was part of a launch of the Bond films on Blu-ray and current Bond Daniel Craig had 22 seconds of footage in the nearly 105 second long advertisement. Fans are insulted because had it not been for Connery’s endorsement, Craig may never have been accepted by James Bond fans when he took over the role from Pierce Brosnan.
There has been no official response from the producers of the franchise on why Connery was given a passing mention. For now, the fans are voicing their disappointment over the snub. No matter how long it has been since the Scottish brogue uttered the words, “Bond. James Bond,” he remains the real 007. Connery is the genuine article and for his supporters all others are imitations of the real thing.
