Sky Captain Takes Top Spot at Box Office
The cutting-edge computer generated film, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie conquered the box office this weekend. The action fantasy shot in front of a blue screen was expected to be released earlier this summer, but due to post-production problems, the film opened in September. Although the film earned the top spot, its sales of an estimated $16.2 million was not ideal for the $70 million Paramount studios budgeted for the film.
The Bernie Mac comedy "Mr. 3000", also debuting this weekend, took second earning $9.2 million, beating "Resident Evil: Apocalypse", which premiered at number one last weekend. The film sequel based on the popular video game decreased 61% in sales collecting a total of $37.4 million.
The romantic comedy, "Wimbledon" starring Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany debuted fourth this weekend and New Line's thriller, "Cellular" completed the top five.
