Slumdog Actress's Trust Still Protected

Slumdog child star's trust still protected amidst allegations of her father trying to sell her.

Hot on the heels of allegations that the father of Slumdog Millionaire child actress, Rubina Ali, attempted to sell the 9-year-old into adoption, the trust which was set up to support the child stars is said to be protected and untouched.

"The Trust will support Rubina, her parents and responsible authorities to ensure the rights and best interests of Rubina are protected," says Noshir H. Dawdrawala, chair of the Jai Ho Trust, in a statement to MTV News.

Filmmakers of Slumdog created the Jai Ho Trust out of their own pockets to ensure that the welfares of both Ali and her costar, Azharuddin Ismail, are being watched over. According to MTV, the trust gives each family a monthly stipend for living costs, educational scholarships, and a lump sum payment after the stars turn 18.

The story has come to light ever since the News of the World, a British tabloid, staged a taped undercover operation with reporters posing as a wealthy family from Dubai who claimed they were interested in adopting Rubina. They offered her father $400,000 in exchange for his daughter. Qureshi has since denied any involvement.

"Well, we had gone there to meet [the News of the World reporters] in good will, but they have made false allegations about me and tried to frame me," Qureshi told reporters outside the Mumbai police station. "I have told the police that they had called me and my family there to frame us wrongly, and they have presented this in a different way."

Shortly after, Ali's estranged mother, Khurshid Begum, filed a complaint with Indian police upon hearing of the allegations from her eldest daughter. And in an odd turn of events, BBC News recently published a video of Begum and her mother-in-law fighting on the streets of Mumbai over the situation.
