Kristen Kreuk, who played Lana Lang for all ten seasons of The CW’s Smallville, has been cast in another show for the network, Beauty and the Beast.
Deadline reported Thursday that Kreuk has been cast as the female lead in the show’s pilot. Beauty and the Beast will be loosely based on the late 1980s show, which starred Linda Hamilton in the female lead role. The CW is describing the new version as a hybrid of a modern love story and procedural drama.
Kreuk will play an NYPD detective named Catherine who witnessed her mother’s murder nine years ago. The murderer was killed by a beast named Vincent, who Catherine spends years searching for. When she finally finds him, she becomes the protector of his life as a superhero. Sons of Anarchy’s Ron Perlman played Vincent in the original series, but the role has yet to be cast for the new pilot.
Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper will write the pilot and act as executive producers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Other executive producers include Paul J. Witt, C. Anthony Thomas, Ron Koslow and Bill Haber. Gary Fleder will direct. Koslow created the original series. Witt and Thomas also worked as producers on the series, which ran for three seasons from 1987 to 1990.
Since Smallville ended, Kreuk appeared in an arc of NBC’s Chuck in 2010 and appeared in 2011’s Vampire.
