The infamous blue creatures from Mideval Europe known as the Smurfs celebrate their 50th successful year, with talks of a movie and more females in the village. Still very popular around the world, the Smurfs cartoons bring in an estimated $5-12 million a year, and this year is shaping up to be even better. With word of a movie from Paramount Pictures in the ever popular computer-animated 3-D style, the Smurfs are also being honored with commemorative stamps, statuettes, new cartoons and an exhibit in Brussels' Cartoon Museum. As well, the Smurf village will see a larger female population instead of just Smurfette, who was originally created by the cartoon's antagonist, Gargamel, in an effort to create jealousy within the village. Keep an eye out in the next few weeks for more information about the upcoming movie.
