Alex Da Silva, a salsa dance instructor who worked as a choreographer on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance received a 10-year prison sentence Friday for raping a woman and assaulting another.
According to E! News, Da Silva, 43, had been convicted by a Los Angeles jury back in September for the August 2002 rape of a 22-year-old female student and the March 2009 assault of a 25-year-old woman with the intent to rape.
He was also charged with a series of other sexual assaults during private lessons between 2003 and 2009, but the jury was deadlocked on the other counts, which included the rape of two other women in 2004 and 2005. There was also an additional charge related to the 2009 assault that the jury was deadlocked on. If they had found him guilty on all of those charges, he could have received a life sentence.
The Los Angeles Times reports that after his 10-year sentence is over, the Brazilian native will have to register as a sex offender. Los Angeles Superior Judge Kathleen Kennedy, who gave him the sentence and denied requests for another trial, told him that he “does not respect women” and that he “believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants when he wants.”
Da Silva was arrested back in August, 2009 at his North Hollywood home.
TMZ notes that Da Silva appeared on So You Think You Can Dance during the show’s first four seasons.
