Sonic Youth Returns to Indie Label

It took 20 years, but they're back.

Sonic Youth has left Geffen Records after two decades, and signed on to now make music with independent label Matador Records.

The move means that the veteran rock group's new album, set for a release next year, will be released without the power (or lack thereof, depending on your view of the situation) of a major label. It will still be released, however, worldwide (except for Japan).

Matador seems to be ecstatic about Sonic Youth joining their label.

"They have a tremendous amount to do with why I'm actually involved in this stuff," said Matador co-founder Gerard Cosloy, who previously worked with the band in the 1980s at Homestead Records. "The number of bands on Matador who they've made an indelible impact on, both musically and personally, is a pretty long list."

Sonic Youth's last album with Geffen, Rather Ripped, reached No. 71 on the Billboard 200 charts in 2006.

"Matador is a super strong, high-profile label with an indie distribution system that is exactly what a band like us in this current climate needs more than anything," Guitarist/vocalist Thurston Moore told Billboard.
