Sony Announces New PlayStation Movie and TV Show Download Service
According to AP News, Sony will begin offering a downloadable movie and TV show service this September that will enable users to download feature-length films to their PlayStation 3 consoles.
Sony announced their plans for the download service at the E3 Business and Media Summit Tuesday.
Standard and high-definition movies and TV shows from studios such as Fox, Warner Bros. and Disney will be able to be transferred to a PlayStation Portable (PSP) after being downloaded to PlayStation 3 consoles. They plan to offer over 1,200 TV episodes and over 300 movie titles at launch.
Rentals will range from $2.99 to $5.99, and customers will have 14 days to watch their downloaded content. Purchases will range from $9.99 to $14.99. Customers will be able to download the content from the PlayStation online store.
In addition to the new service, Sony will offer a new PS3 console that holds more memory. This 89-gigabyte PS3 will retail for $399, beginning in September.
Some of the films to be offered in September include: Lionsgate's 3:10 to Yuma, MGM's Rocky, and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man. Sony will also be introducing original programming such as "Xam'd: Lost Memories," an anime series developed by the company in Japan.
