Sopranos bid farewell but shine at Emmy Award nominations

Emmy Awards

Long-running mob saga "The Sopranos" may have bid farewell, but shone after snatching up outstanding drama and best writing and directing after loosing out five times in the past. They stole the show at LA's equivalent to the Oscars of television on Sunday. They led the field of contenders, which included "Greys Anatomy," "Boston Legal," "House" and "Heroes!" Director David Chase admits it was his cast that made the drama so successful and was sure to let everyone watching know.

American Ferrera, the "Ugly Bettys" star, swept up the award for leading actress in the comedy awards, quoting, "It is truly an amazing, wonderful thing that happens when your dreams come true." Ricky Gervais won best actor for his comedy role in "Extras." However, it was NBC'S "30 Rock" that came out on top for the comedy awards.

Cable channel HBO won the challenge with 21 Emmys, followed by NBC, with 19, well ahead of CBS' 10, ABC's nine, Fox's embarrassing seven. Two-time Oscar winner Sally Field went home with outstanding lead actress in a drama with her third Emmy for the series "Brothers Sisters," alongside James Spader who took the equivalent for actor, for his role as an eccentric attorney in "Boston Legal."

However what seemed to be the most popular and welcomed award of the evening went to former vice president and now environmental campaigner Al Gore, accepting an award for his Current TV -- a cable channel based on viewer-created content. He received a great reception from the manic audience!

Renowned crooner Tony Bennett came out with three awards, including best individual performance in a variety or music program.

"Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" won the outstanding made-for-television-movie trophy, however it was unsuccessful in anything else, even though it was the most nominated, with 17 nods. Old hand actors and Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Helen Mirren received top acting awards for a miniseries or movie for the Western "Broken Trail" and (The Queen) was honored for "Prime Suspect."
