South African Runner a Hermaphrodite?
The New York Times reports that world champion South African runner Caster Semanaya has dropped out of a race amidst questions regarding her sex. Last month in Berlin, Semenya won the 800 meters at the world track and field championships. International track officials want to "undergo sex-determination testing to confirm her further eligibility."According to ABC News, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) refuses to confirm or deny reports that Semanaya may be a hermaphrodite. The gender test and the results are complete, but the IAAF said in a statement that it won't reveal the results of the test till November.
TIME states that the South African government is considering filing a lawsuit against the IAAF over its conduct regarding the gender verification test required of Semenya.
