In what has been a tumultuous nine years for everyone involved in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the show finally opened on Broadway Tuesday night.

After months of revamping, the musical, which has been plagued with delays, injuries, and high expenses, created an emotional scene at the Foxwoods Theater in New York City.

Bono, lead singer of U2 and the show's musical director, was greeted with a standing ovation by the audience, leading him to proclaim, "We had to save Spider-Man because Spider-Man has to save New York," Ok! Magazine reported.

According to the Daily Mail, former director Julie Taymor was among the high-profile crowd and was called up from her seat to join the cast and crew on stage during the ovation.

She was kindly embraced with hugs and a bouquet of roses, even sharing a special moment with her replacement, director Philip WIlliam McKilnley.

"I just want to thank everybody," she told the audience. "Especially this cast and crew."
