Spielberg Pooh-Poohs Rumors of Poppins Remake
Mary Levy, a representative for Steven Spielberg, recently appeared on his fansite www.spielbergfilms.com to quash rumors that the director was mulling over a remake of the classic Mary Poppins. In her statement Levy said, "I think a spoonful of sugar went down the wrong way. I never heard of this and couldn't imagine Steven ever doing a remake of a classic — and a Disney classic at that. There's a Broadway show from Disney but nothing involving us in any way."
Given the box office success of other book series, such as Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia, it would seem plausible that the books of author P.L. Travers would be right for further big screen adaptations. However, if the film versions do see the greenlight of Hollywood approval, it will not be with Spielberg at the helm according to representatives of his Amblin Entertainment.
The musical play will begin showing at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City in October 2006.
