Unlike his friend, George Lucas, director Steven Spielberg won’t be changing any of his films.
At a recent event Spielberg said he learned his lesson on that when he re-issued his classic movie E.T.-The Extra-Terrestrial(1982).
“I tried this once and lived to regret it," Spielberg said. "Not because of fan outrage, but because I was disappointed in myself.
"I got overly sensitive to [some of the reaction -- including parents who had been less than pleased with the guns in the film] to “E.T.,” and I thought if technology evolved, [I might go in and change some things]… it was OK for a while, but I realised what I had done was I had robbed people who loved “E.T.” of their memories of E.T.”
He also announced that the original cut of E.T. would be coming on Blu-ray.
Spielberg didn’t make any comments toward Lucas, though. They both collaborated on the Indiana Jones films. Lucas has been alienated a number of Star Wars fans in recent years for the changes he’s making to that saga-and for not releasing the original theatrical cuts on blu-ray. The blu-ray editions of the redone saga are due in stores Friday.
In addition to E.T., Spielberg has made changes to his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). However, in both cases, he’s made the original theatrical cuts available for buyers as well.
