Spike Lee threw a party for the late King of Pop in Brooklyn while fans celebrated in Illinois on Saturday.

Spike Lee, famed filmmaker, hosted a birthday celebration in Brooklyn for what would have been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday on Saturday. Jackson fans also celebrated in Gary, Ill., that day.

According to New York Daily News, the Brooklyn bash took place in Prospect Park in the rain, where each of the thousands of dancers wore a single glove in honor of the King of Pop. On the stage provided, deejays played Jackson's music from his entire career including his start in the Jackson Five. There were also balloons in the sky and a birthday cake with Jackson's name on it.

Associated Press reports that Lee reminisced about his friendship and collaboration with Jackson, especially when Lee directed two music videos for the pop star in 1996. "I was just like everyone else. I loved his talent," Lee said. Hawkers also attended the party and provided Jackson memorabilia.

Meanwhile, fans in Gary, Ill., celebrated Jackson's birthday in front of his childhood home on Jackson St., Gary Post Tribune reports. Many musicians and Jackson impersonators arrived on the stage provided to pay tribute. Tent vendors sold memorabilia such as DVDs and Jackson T-shirts.
