SpongeBob Takes Second

Long weekend may be filled with movies and turkey leftovers.

The family friendly, "SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" opened in second place with $33.5 million in ticket sales this weekend, behind Nicholas Cage's "National Treasure," which made $35.2 million. Not to be forgotten, the animated superhero tale "The Incredibles" slipped into third place and capped off the weekend with $26.8 million. The film has made $177.8 million in three weeks.

The "Polar Express" came in fourth, with $15.2 million in its second weekend. Costing $170 million to make, the movie has had a cool reception from audiences, taking in $51 million in 10 days, the Associated Press reported.

While ticket sales are down slightly from last year's figures, the Thanksgiving weekend will probably help fill movie house seats. Films like Oliver Stone's "Alexander," which features heartthrob Colin Farrell, and Tim Allen's "Christmas With the Kranks," will square off later this week.

"With this many family films, it's going to be a bloodbath," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. He added that " 'The Incredibles' is going to be a huge factor, 'Spongy' is going to be a huge factor. Even 'Polar Express,' which people were trashing on, will be a factor because it's a holiday movie."
