Spring Awakening Sweeps Tony's

Musical wins top honors at Sunday's ceremony

Spring Awakening, the coming of age musical about teenage love and sex, was the big winner at last night's 61st annual Tony Awards. "Awakening" won eight awards in total including top honors for best musical as well as awards for featured or supporting actor, direction, lighting and orchestrations. Pop star Duncan Sheik took home his first Tony award for best score for "Awakening." During his acceptance speech Sheik cheered, "Musical theater rocks!"The night's other big winner was "The Coast of Utopia." The play took home seven awards, which is a record for non-musical categories. Cast members Billy Crudup and Jennifer Ehle took home awards in the featured actor and actress categories, while Jack O'Brien took home the best director award.In true Tony form, the 3-hour broadcast featured cast performances from the best musical nominees. American Idol season three winner Fantasia, who is currently staring in "The Color Purple," was also on hand to perform "I'm Here."
