Springsteen Performs for 80,000 Obama Supporters
Rock and roll musician Bruce Springsteen performed for 80,000 Barack Obama rally attendees in Cleveland on Sunday as part of the campaign's home stretch before the election, according to the AFP."[There are] a handful of people who enter into your lives through their music and tell the American people's story," the Democratic presidential nominee said after Springsteen performed, taking the stage with his wife, Michelle, and two daughters. "Bruce Springsteen is one of those people."
Springsteen performed a medley of politically-themed songs, including a rendition of "This Land Is Your Land." Tears erupted in the crowd when the rocker performed "The Rising," a song Springsteen wrote about the Sept. 11 attacks. The song is also played just before Obama takes the stage at all of his rallies.
"So I don't know about you, but I want my country back, I want my dream back, I want my America back," Springsteen told the crowd amidst cheers.
"Our social contract has been shredded. We're going to need all the angels we can get," Springsteen said. He added praise for "Senator Obama's efforts to build a house big enough for all our dreams."
Springsteen also performed at a rally for 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in Ohio on the eve of the election, though Kerry lost the state. Springsteen and Obama are hoping this rally helps the Democratic nominee clinch the swing state on Tuesday's election.
