Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will undergo surgery today to repair the broken nose he sustained when he was sacked by Haloti Ngata of the Baltimore Ravens during the first quarter of last night’s game.
Ngata made accidental contact with Roethlisberger’s facemask with his left hand, and the two-time Super Bowl winner’s nose was visibly mangled as he walked towards the sideline with his helmet off after the play.
“I just knew it was bleeding, and then when I got to the sideline I could tell just by the look on everyone’s face that something wasn’t right,” Roethlisberger said, according to the Washington Post. “I looked real quick. I don’t know, I look like I just went 12 rounds with [Manny] Pacquiao.”
Roethlisberger, who wore a reinforced shoe to protect his sprained right foot during the game, joked that the broken nose “took some of the pain away” from his lower extremity injury.
Roethlisberger completed 22-of-38 passes for 253 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Steelers’ 13-10 victory over the Ravens.
“We just find ways to get it done,” the injured quarterback told reporters. “[Sunday’s victory] may not be pretty, obviously, look at me, but we get it done.”
With their victory over Baltimore on Sunday night, Pittsburgh took a one-game lead in the AFC North and put themselves in position for a first-round bye in the playoffs for the time being.
