Stephanie Meyer's 'The Host' Lives Up to Expectations

Sandie Young
The author of 'Twilight' has another novel worth reading

After writing a book like Twilight, readers have high expectations for Stephanie Meyer. She released The Host in 2008. It seems that many are just now discovering this novel or have yet to discover it because of the hype for The Twilight Saga in theaters.

But after reading The Host, I can personally say that it is one novel you should not overlook. One might miss the addicting characters Meyer created in her all-star series, but these characters are also striking. It seems Meyer's strength is creating characters that are relatable and utterly interesting.

The main characters in The Host consist of a twisted family. The story is about a race of aliens who take over planets and inhibit the bodies of those who live there. When they come to Earth, they face a struggle. People like the main character, Melanie, won't go down without a fight.

The alien named Wanderer takes over Melanie's body. When Melanie's thoughts do not disappear, the two are forced to coexist. Wanderer is overtaken by Melanie's love for her family in hiding. Wanderer leaves her own society to find the man she loves, Jared, and Melanie's brother, Jamie.

There are a few slow areas, but the book quickly picks up and takes the reader on a long journey. It is easy to become intrigued and deeply engaged in the romance between two minds in one body and a man they both can't get enough of.

This book may not be the next Twilight, but it is surely worth reading once or twice. Visit Stephanie Meyer's website to learn more about the book.
