Stephenie Meyer Faces Lawsuit
Stephenie Meyer, author of the famous "Twilight" series, is now facing a lawsuit for having "taken ideas" from author Jordan Scott's book, "The Nocturne." Scott's attorney believes that if readers disregard the difference between "The Nocturne" and Meyer's "Breaking Dawn," there would be too many similarities between them to say it is just coincidental. Which is exactly the reason why a copyright-infringement lawsuit has been filed against Meyer as of Wednesday, in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit also extends to Hachette Book Group, Meyer's publisher.
"We've laid out in the complaint what the similarities are and obviously we're going to disagree [with Hachette] about that, but that's what makes it a horse race," Craig Williams, Scott's attorney, said on Thursday. Williams did not disagree with the fact that "Forever Dawn" was copyrighted by Hachette in 2004, but argued that "Breaking Dawn" has yet to be copyrighted.
"If you take away everything but the similarities and see if they match up . . . if you take away the difference in this case, the similarities are very similar. Stephenie Meyer has taken ideas from Jordan's book, though they both go in different directions," said Williams.
