Steve Carell is departing from his hit television series The Office.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Carell will make his final appearance on the series April 28. This is three weeks before the hour-long season finale on May 19. Will Ferrell is set to guest star as a replacement for Carell’s character Michael Scott.

Carrell has reportedly been informing NBC that the 2010-2011 season will be his last on the show for some time. Carell said he’s leaving in order to better balance his work and family life.

He filmed his last scenes for the series on March 4. NBC stated that there is a possibility for Carell to return to the show should he wish to in the future.

Carell’s success on The Office has won him a Golden Globe and five Emmy nominations. He also appeared in the films Bruce Almighty (2003), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), and Date Night (2010).
