Aerosmith front man and American Idol judge Steven Tyler sang the National Anthem before the AFC Conference Championship game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens Sunday afternoon.

While the Patriots did go on to win, it probably was not because they were inspired by Tyler’s performance. While he did not flub all of the lyrics to the “Star Spangled Banner,” his singing was still met with critics.

According to E! News, the 63-year-old rock star sang wearing one of his signature scarves, although this one showed that he was clearly rooting for the Patriots in this game. After the game, Tyler did celebrate the team’s victory, which sends them to the Super Bowl on Feb. 5, with members of the team.

The Wrap reports that Tyler did have a tiny screw-up with a lyric, singing “as bomb bursting in air” instead of “the bombs bursting in air.” The site also adds that the crowd gave a lukewarm response, probably proving that Tyler might not have made it to the next round of Idol auditions if he sang like that in front of the judges.

TIME also reports that many sports writers went after Tyler’s singing. FOXsports.com’s Jason Whitlock called it “far more obscene than Janet Jackson’s t***y,” while ESPN’s Skip Bayless asked, ““How could Patriots be inspired by that awful anthem sung by Steven Tyler? At least give him some screaming guitars to camouflage voice.”

“I went outside to put a raccoon out of its misery – then I realized my neighbor was watching Steven Tyler sing the Star-Spangled Banner,” wrote FoxNews’ Greg Gutfeld.

Even Bleacher Report made it clear how it felt about Tyler’s performance, using the headline “Watch Steven Tyler Butcher the National Anthem.”
